Directors Home Addresses in the Public Domain
The usual residential address of all UK directors and company secretaries must be filed at Companies House and must be available for public inspection. Companies House operates an entirely open register and all information filed is available to the general public and is therefore in the public domain.

More information can be obtained directly from Companies House: www.companieshouse.gov.uk/freedomInformation/freedomInfo.shtml

Accountability and Transparency
Having company directors' home addresses on the public record is important for reasons of accountability and transparency and has been a requirement under company law since 1917. One of the main practical benefits of this accountability is that unscrupulous directors cannot simply cease trading their company, without some avenue available to creditors to pursue the directors of the company directly. Full details of a directors previous directorships and previous home addresses must also be clearly transparent in the public domain, to ensure that effective business and credit related decisions can be made based on all the information that is available.

Obtaining a Confidentiality Order
Section 45 of the Criminal Justice and Police Act 2001 allows directors who believe that their residential address, by being on the public record, would create a serious risk that they or those who live with them, would be subject to violence or intimidation, may apply to the Secretary of State for a confidentiality order under section 723B of the Companies Act 1985. The granting of an order by the Secretary of State enables a director to file a service address instead of their home address for the public record. A home address will still have to be provided to Companies House, but is kept on a separate, secure register to which only competent authorities such as the police and certain other public sector regulators have a right of access.

More information on how to obtain a confidential order and the relevant costs, is available on the DTI website:
