Companies House controls the use of the limited company names included within our limited company list. For a company or limited liability partnership, a business name shown in our limited company list is any name which is carried on in business other than by an individual. Business names in our limited company list are not registered under the Companies Act 2006, but some of the rules do apply.
This includes not providing misleading or inappropriate use of the word “limited” and the restriction of specific words in the company name which could lead to confusion as to whether the business is connected to a public body or government department. If a business showing in our limited company list includes any words or expressions that could be misleading, it must have first obtained the written approval of the relevant body, before Companies House will include it in their approved limited company list.
